Creating 240 cycle parking spaces for Bishops Stortford rail station

The Bishops Stortford rail station is undergoing major redevelopment, including the creation of additional cycle and motorcycle parking spaces to encourage sustainable travel.

As is the case with most rail environments, space was at a premium and it needed to provide safe and secure cycle parking for passengers. The cycle parking improvements helped transform what was a run-down area and also enabled the station to secure an area that was constantly being targeted by fare dodgers.

THE SOLUTION

We used our two-tier cycle parking system to provide 220 parking spaces and integrated a cycle shelter canopy to ensure weather protection. This was supplemented by 20 standard cycle racks.

The station wanted access control, so the site was fenced to three sides and also used an existing wall to form a compound. We installed an access controlled entry / exit system and users purchased a fob which gives them access to the cycle compound area.

The bike compound included integrated lighting and clear signage to help people use the two tier cycle parking system. Polycarbonate hoardings allowed platform and train information to be displayed.

In addition we also installed an exit only turnstyle to allow for quick exit (often a priority when people are rushing to catch trains)

We also included a separate area within the cycle compound for motorcycles.

Because we design and fabricate our two tier cycle parking systems we were also able to match the fittings with grey and red powder coating in line with the Greater Anglia branding.
